Storage for South Shore
homes, guest houses and seasonal trade
South Shore is a busy mix of terraced streets, flats, guest houses and businesses that live by the summer season. If space at home or work is tight, this guide helps you judge whether a unit at The Rock Factory in central Blackpool is the right fit.
Who in South Shore tends to need extra space
South Shore runs from the southern end of the promenade, with the Pleasure Beach and South Pier, back through rows of terraced houses and converted flats. It is a part of town where space is often in short supply.
The people who usually look for storage or a small unit here include:
- Guest house and holiday flat owners who need somewhere for spare bedding, linen, replacement furniture and decorating materials, especially during a refit between seasons.
- People living in flats with no loft, garage or shed, who need a home for bikes, camping gear, seasonal clothes or furniture they are not ready to part with.
- Seasonal traders whose stock and kit sits idle for part of the year and takes over the house when it does.
- Tenants between homes, which is common in an area with a lot of rented property.
A note for guest house and holiday-let owners
If you run accommodation, you know the pattern. In the busy months every room earns its keep, so nothing can be stored in one. Then the quieter months arrive and it is time for repairs, repainting and new furniture, which all need somewhere to go while the work happens.
A 150 sq ft roller-shutter unit at £65 a week (about £282 a month) gives you a dry, lit space to hold spare mattresses, linen stock and furniture during a refit. When the work is done you can give one month's notice, or keep the unit and swap to a different size, subject to availability. If the refit is a bigger job, our guide to storage during a renovation covers planning and packing.
Business use of a unit needs our prior approval, so tell us how you plan to use it when you enquire.
Seasonal businesses and stock
Plenty of livelihoods in this part of town follow the visitor calendar. If your stock, stall equipment or signage lives in your hallway over winter, a unit can give you your home back and keep everything in one place for the next season.
For bulkier kit, the 180 sq ft unit at £78 a week has a roller shutter for loading. Our guide to running a seasonal business in Blackpool and the page on units for market traders have more ideas. Rent is rolling monthly, so you are not tied into a long lease through the quiet months if your plans change.
Living in a flat with nowhere to put things
Many South Shore homes are flats carved out of larger houses, and they rarely come with a loft or a shed. The result is familiar: a bike in the hall, a suitcase on the wardrobe, the Christmas decorations under the bed.
A good rule is to keep at home what you use every week, and store what you use a few times a year. Things that often move out happily include:
- Camping, fishing and sports kit used on a handful of weekends.
- Winter or summer clothes and bedding, packed in sealed boxes.
- Furniture you are keeping for a bigger home later.
- Paperwork you must keep but rarely look at.
Our guide on how to pack a storage unit shows how to fit it all in so the things you need are at the front.
Choosing between a store near you and central Blackpool
There may be storage options closer to your street. It is worth comparing honestly rather than defaulting to the nearest one. Things to check, wherever you look:
- Access hours. We offer 24-hour access, which matters if you work evenings or weekends in season.
- Power and Wi-Fi. Ours are connected in every unit. Electricity is charged at the supplier rate with no markup, and there are no utility deposits.
- Contract length. We ask for one month minimum, then one month's notice.
- Whether you can work there. Many stores are storage only. With prior approval, our units can be used as a workspace too.
- The full monthly cost, including any deposit, insurance or admin fees elsewhere. Our deposit is equal to one month's rent.
Our guide to how storage prices work explains what to compare line by line.
