Storage for Thornton-Cleveleys
downsizing, hobbies and mobile trades

Thornton-Cleveleys combines a seaside town with a quieter inland side, and lots of homes there are bungalows with limited storage. This guide looks at who might use a unit at The Rock Factory in central Blackpool, and what to weigh up first.

Thornton-Cleveleys in brief

Cleveleys has its seafront promenade and shopping streets, and the tramway runs through it on the way to Fleetwood. Thornton, inland, is home to Marsh Mill, the restored windmill. The A585 runs between the two on its way north to Fleetwood. The whole area is part of Wyre borough.

It is a popular place to retire to and to bring up a family, and there are plenty of bungalows. That mix creates some specific storage needs.

Bungalow life and the missing upstairs

A bungalow has many advantages, but it usually means fewer rooms and often a loft that is awkward or unsafe to climb into. For people who have moved from a house, the belongings that used to fill a spare bedroom and a loft now have nowhere obvious to go.

Storage can help, but it is worth being selective. Ask of each item: will I use this, will someone in the family want it, or am I keeping it out of habit? Things worth storing are those with a clear future, such as furniture promised to a grandchild, or Christmas things you bring out every year.

Our ground-floor units have no steps to climb inside them, which suits bulky or heavy items. The storage pods opening in spring 2027 are on the first floor and reached by stairs, so they suit lighter boxes. See our guide to decluttering with storage too.

Helping a parent move somewhere smaller

Often it is the adult children who look for storage, not the person moving. If you are helping a parent move into a bungalow, flat or care setting, storage can take some of the pressure off a stressful time.

  1. Agree what matters mostAsk which pieces they want around them in the new home, and start there.
  2. Do not decide everything at onceStore what the family needs time to think about, rather than rushing it to a clearance firm.
  3. Keep paperwork separateWills, deeds and financial papers deserve their own clearly labelled box.
  4. Share the listSend everyone in the family a copy of what is in storage, so decisions can be made together.

The person who signs up becomes the tenant and needs valid government-issued photo ID and a Direct Debit mandate.

Room for a hobby

Retirement is often when a hobby finally gets the space it deserves: woodwork, model railways, sewing, painting, restoring bikes. In a bungalow, that space may not exist at home.

A unit with lighting, power and Wi-Fi can become a small workshop or studio. The 160 sq ft unit with a security door feels more like a room than a garage. Our page on units for makers and studios has ideas, and setting up a small workshop covers the basics.

Please check our rules first. Anything that involves melting or heating combustibles, such as candle making, soap making or resin casting, is not allowed. Woodwork, sewing, painting with water-based materials and model making are generally fine. Remember that use other than storage needs our prior approval, and power is standard single-phase.

For mobile businesses based in the area

Mobile businesses such as cleaners, dog groomers, window cleaners, gardeners and mobile mechanics often keep everything in the van and the rest in the garage. A unit gives you a base to restock, store spare equipment and keep paperwork in order.

A 150 sq ft roller-shutter unit at £65 a week (about £282 a month) is often enough for supplies and spares. Remember that bulk fuel, solvent-based chemicals and gas cylinders are not permitted unless agreed in writing. Our page on units for mobile service businesses explores this further.

Something nearby or a unit in central Blackpool

The best choice depends on the job. For things you need weekly or daily, the journey from Thornton-Cleveleys is worth testing before you commit. For long-term storage or a hobby space you visit a few times a week, other factors may matter more:

  • Whether the space has power and Wi-Fi so you can actually use it.
  • Whether there are toilets and somewhere to make a drink. We have both.
  • Access hours. Ours is 24-hour.
  • Whether you can leave at a month's notice. You can here.
